Understanding Your Skin: Dry vs Dehydrated

Skincare Advice at Avant Garde Salon in Harlow, Essex

Dry skin vs Dehydrated skin...what's the difference? Here, our Beauty Therapist Eminae explains.

''I'm often asked about the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin'', says Eminae. ''They are, in fact, two very different skin issues.
Identifying whether your skin is dry or dehydrated is the first step in treating it effectively. Once you understand how dehydrated skin differs from dry skin, it will be much easier to select the right products and skincare routine for a radiant complexion''.

Dry skin: A closer look

Dry skin is not just a condition – it’s a skin type, much like oily or combination skin, and it’s largely determined by genetics, explains Eminae.
She adds, “Dry skin typically lacks oil, which can give it a flaky, tight appearance. It may also look scaly, show signs of redness and irritation, and is more prone to conditions like psoriasis, eczema or dermatitis.” Adopting a ‘dry skin routine’ is essential. Unsure where to start? Dehydrated skin: Beyond the surface

This occurs when there’s a lack of water in the skin, explains Eminae. It can affect anyone, regardless of their skin type, so people with oily skin can still experience dehydrated skin. Dehydrated skin typically looks dull, can feel itchy, and show premature signs of ageing, such as fine lines.
It’s entirely possible for your skin to be both dry and dehydrated. If this sounds like you, let’s discuss your ideal skincare routine to address both issues effectively.

What leads to dehydrated skin?

Dehydration is usually due to insufficient water intake and/or compromised skin moisture barrier. If you’re not drinking enough water, then your skin may become dehydrated from the inside out. If the skin’s moisture barrier becomes damaged, your skin may lose hydration through its surface. Harsh cleansers, over-exfoliating and chlorine in pools can all compromise this barrier. While environmental stressors like air conditioning and central heating can also sap the surrounding air of moisture, which in turn pulls hydration from your skin.

Revitalise your skin

To combat dehydration, focus on identifying and rectifying the cause - be it lifestyle, diet or your environment. Drinking plenty of water is essential, as hydration starts from within. Remember, says Eminae, the skin is the last organ to receive the nutrients we consume, which means it’s the last to get the water you drink. If you don’t drink enough your skin will be the first to miss out.

Daily skincare essentials for dehydrated skin

1. Choose a mild cleanser, such as Wipe Away the Years to avoid stripping your skin of its natural oils.
2. Steer clear of harsh scrubs and rough cleansing brushes.
3. Avoid alcohol-based toners as these can further dehydrate your skin. Revitalising tonic is gentle.
4. Pop a spray water mist in your bag for moisture top-ups throughout the day. A humidifier can help maintain optimal humidity levels, especially in heavily air-conditioned or heated environments.
5. Book our hands on facials for a deep hydration boost to revitalise and plump skin.
